Syracuse, New York, was once known as "The Salt City" because of the salt brines from a lake nearby; it intersected with Erie Canal and later the railroads and even later key highway transit lines. Its latitude is about 43 degrees N and longitude is about 76 degrees west. It is named for a Sicilian city, Siracusa, also known for its salt production.
