Disturbances to an ecosystem, such as fires and floods, are often seen as negative. Describe a situation where regular disturbances are not only beneficial, but are required to sustain the ecosystem.

Possible Answer: Many ecosystems are dependent upon seasonal floods to bring in new nutrients or seasonal fires to clear underbrush or to germinate seeds. In the absence of these events, the organisms that have adapted to those situations would struggle.
