You are planning to open a home childcare that will serve children ages 6 weeks to 6 years. You plan to use your living room, kitchen, and an empty bedroom that adjoins the living room for your childcare space.
a) What learning centers will you include in your childcare?
b) Where will you locate each of the centers?
c) What will you need to consider in serving multiple age groups?
d) Specifically how will you design the space to meet the needs of the infants, toddlers, and preschoolers?

a) You would want to include the learning centers that would be found in an early childhood center, although these will most likely look different in a home childcare. These include literacy, math, science, manipulation, sensory, physical, block and building, dramatic play, art, and music.
b) There are many correct answers. The ideal answer will take advantage of the family living space. For example, the literacy would be in the living room, while art would be in the kitchen. Also, quiet and noisier activities would be grouped.
c) In serving multiple age groups, you must consider the developmental needs of each group. This includes thinking about eliminating choking hazards for infants and toddlers while also allowing older children to use small manipulatives.
d) There are many correct answers. For example, the bedroom could be designed for preschool children while all items in the living room would be safe for younger children. Alternatively, a loft could be placed in the bedroom that would only be available to older children.
