This would have declined as suburbs grew and employment transitioned to the technological base. The answer for the differences in demographics should include factors such as job availability, migration from the South and poverty. These demographic still largely exist today. The reason include earlier factors, though employment ability has declined. Some changes exist as well due to the increasing mobility of the population.
