Explain what intercultural competency is. Why is it important to be culturally competent?
-
Cultural or intercultural competency in a broad sense, is having the knowledge, skills, and abilities to work and live in a culturally diverse world. Intercultural competency is developmental in nature. It is a personal process that involves having the right attitude (respecting and valuing other cultures, openness or withholding judgment, curiosity and discovery, and tolerating ambiguity); and, possessing knowledge and comprehension skills (cultural self-awareness, deep cultural knowledge, and language skills) regarding other cultures. If a person has acquired these skills, then he or she should be able to properly internalize cultural issues (empathy, adaptability, and taking an ethno-relative view of situations and then engage in external actions (i.e., appropriate forms of communication \and behaviors). Developing intercultural competency skills is continuous and lifelong; culturally competent individuals repeatedly seek out the opportunity to learn, understand, and appreciate other cultures. Intercultural competency is also an organizational responsibility. Organizations must value and promote diversity and inclusion, creating a core set of values and principles, while modeling pro-cultural behaviors and attitudes on both a philosophical end goal and as a means to improve profitability.
