- Interpersonal needs theory provides insight into our motivation to communicate. This theory consists of three needs: affection, inclusion, and control.
* The need for affection is the need to feel likable or lovable.
* The interpersonal need for inclusion encompasses our needs to feel significant and worthwhile.
* The third need is our motivation for power or influence in our relationships.
- Although many other needs exist, according to psychologist Will Schutz, most interpersonal behavior and motivation can be directly related to the need for affection, inclusion, and control. Although needs differ from person to person, from situation to situation, and from culture to culture, knowing and understanding our interpersonal needs should help us see how they influence and motivate our interactions with others.
- For most of us, our interpersonal needs do not remain static; desire and importance vary with circumstances.
- Awareness of personal needs and the needs of others also varies, depending on the depth of a relationship, the timing, the context, and so forth. Each need motivates us to interact with others in specific ways.
