Human healthcare management firms have studied how people select healthcare providers. Most studies revealed four common factors. Because companion animals do not select their healthcare providers, it may be concluded these same factors affect the selection of providers of animal health-care and related services. The four most often cited factors are (1) quality and totality of services, (2) convenience/location, (3) relationships (people prefer providers who are courteous, caring, and friendly), and (4) costs/fees.

Dogs have been used in studies to detect various cancers in human subjects. They have been trained to sniff breath samples from humans that were collected by having them breathe into special tubes. The dogs detected 54 of the 55 lung cancer patients as having cancer, detected 28 of the 31 breast cancer patients, and gave only three false-positive results (detecting cancer in people who didn't have it).
