Answer 1

The cells are ruptured during freezing and upon thawing, water held in the cells is lost. Consequently, the fruit or vegetable is less firm.

If the power outage is anticipated to be only a few hours, keep door closed. Once the power is restored, check foods to assess condition. If foods are above 40°F, discard of the foods is advisable.


If the power outage is to be extended then 1) obtain dry ice and place in freezer to hold below freezing temperatures or 2) locate a freezer-locker plant to store the food. When transporting foods to the locker, wrap in insulated paper or blankets to hold cold

temperature as much as possible during transportation
