List the steps employed in assembling and icing a three-layer cake.
Level and trim the cake; split the cake horizontally into layers, brushing away any loose crumbs; position bottom layer on cake board placed on a cake stand; pipe border of buttercream around edge, top with filling, and level it with spatula; position next cake layer and repeat until all layers have been added; coat cake with thin crumb coat of icing; mound more icing on top of cake and push to coat top and sides of cake, smooth and even the icing, then decorate as desired.
