There are six main requirements: coordination and collaboration among chain members, technology investment, organizational processes, committed leadership, flexible job design and employees, and supportive organizational culture and attitudes.
1.Coordination and collaboration: Sharing information and being flexible in terms of who in the
value chain does what are important steps in building coordination and collaboration.
2.Technology investment: the payoff from investment in technology is that information
technology can be used to restructure the value chain to better serve end users.
3.Organizational processes: When managers decide to manage operations using value chain, old
processes are no longer appropriate. Better demand forecasting is necessary because of closer ties with customers and suppliers. Selected functions may need to be done collaboratively with other partners in the value chain. New measure are needed for evaluating performance of various activities along the value chain. Managers need a better picture of how well the customer value is being created and delivered.
4.Leadership: managers must seriously commit to identifying what value is, how that value can
best be provided, and how successful those efforts have been.
5.Employees/HR: Flexibility if the key to job design in value chain management. Traditional
functional job roles don't work with value chain. Jobs must be designed around work processes. Employees may be assigned to work teams that focus on particular processes and may be asked to do different things on different days. An employee's ability to be flexible is critical. The need for flexibility also requires that there be significant investment in continual and ongoing employee training.
6.Organizational culture and attitudes: Cultural attitudes that support successful implementation
of value chain management include sharing, collaboration, openness, flexibility, mutual respect, and trust.
