Description: This is a smear of Escherichia coli (E. coli). They are gram negative bacillus. Notice the cells are very short “rods”. You have to take a few minutes looking at it to see that they are bacillus and not coccus. This makes it challenging sometimes. There are also species that are coccobacillus meaning that the “rods” are short and plumb. Sort of a cross between coccus and bacillus.
