The Role of Parkin in Parkinson’s Disease
Previous Image | Next Image
Description: Parkin is involved in the destruction of abnormal or misfolded proteins by the ubiquitin-proteasome system. If parkin is defective because of a mutation, abnormal or misfolded proteins cannot be destroyed, so they accumulate in the cell. If α-synuclein is defective because of a mutation, parkin is unable to tag it with ubiquitin, and it accumulates in the cell.
