Description: Downwelling occurs when surface waters cool, and also when they lose moisture through evaporation. Salt is left behind, which makes the water denser than the previously fresher water. A good example of downwelling is in the North Atlantic, where the warm North Atlantic Drift loses huge quantities of heat and moisture to the atmosphere above.
