Description: Pompeii. Wall painting. c. 60–50 BCE. Photo taken after 2015 restoration. Villas were the country houses of wealthy Romans, and their plans were often more expansive and irregular. The eruption of Vesuvius in 79 CE preserved not only the houses along the city streets within Pompeii, but also the so-called Villa of the Mysteries just outside the city walls. In the Villa of the Mysteries at Pompeii, murals depict initiation rites into the cult of Bacchus. On the top of the wall, an elegant frieze supported by pilasters is created entirely by paint. The room's characteristic deep red color became known as "Pompeian red."
