Cocaine’s Effect on the Brain

Cocaine’s Effect on the Brain
Previous Image | Next Image
Description: Cocaine blocks the brain’s reuptake of dopamine and norepinephrine
so that synaptic levels of these neurotransmitters rise. The result is
overstimulation of certain brain receptors and a brief euphoric high.
Then, when the drug wears off, a depletion of dopamine may cause the
user to “crash” and become sleepy and depressed.
