Description: The eyes begin to develop about 22 days after fertilization. The ectoderm of the forebrain (prosencephalon) forms the optic grooves. They become the optic vesicles. The optic vesicles reach the surface ectoderm which thickens to form the lens placodes. The distal portion of the optic vesicles forms the optic cups. They remain attached to the prosencephalon by optic stalks.
