Description: A multistep model for colon cancer. The first mutation, in the APC gene, leads to the formation of polyps. Subsequent mutations in genes on chromosomes 12, 18, and 17 cause the transformation of a polyp into a malignant tumor. Subsequent mutations allow cells from the tumor to metastasize, move to other regions of the body, and form new tumors.
