Secretion of H+ in the urine and synthesis of new HCO3–
Previous Image | Next Image
Description: Secretion of hydrogen and bicarbonate synthesis involves 6 stages as follows. 1. C O 2 combines with water to form carbonic acid. 2. Carbonic acid is split, forming hydrogen and bicarbonate. 3. Hydrogen is secreted into the filtrate via primary active transport by a hydrogen A T P ace pump. 4. For each hydrogen secreted, a bicarbonate enters the peritubular capillary blood via an antiport carrier in a bicarbonate chloride exchange process, all via a combination of secondary active transport, simple diffusion, and facilitated diffusion. 5. Secreted hydrogen combines with monohydrogen phosphate in the tubular filtrate, forming dihydrogen phosphate. 6. The dihydrogen phosphate is excreted in the urine.
