Description: Secretion of hydrogen buffered by ammonia involves 3 stages as follows. 1. P C T cells metabolize glutamine to ammonium ions and bicarbonate. 2 A. This weak acid ammonium is secreted into the filtrate via secondary active transport, taking the place of hydrogen on a sodium hydrogen antiport carrier. 2 B. For each ammonium ion secreted, a bicarbonate ion enters the peritubular capillary blood via a symport carrier, by a combination of secondary active transport, simple diffusion, and primary active transport. 3. The ammonium is excreted in the urine.
