Description: Starting in the hypothalamus in the brain, it releases a corticotropin releasing hormone, which flows to the pituitary gland, which produces an adrenocorticotropic hormone, which flows to the adrenal gland. From there, cortisol is sent back to the pituitary gland and the hypothalamus, and is also released into immune cells. The immune cells release proinflammatory cytokines, T N F alpha, I L 1, and I L 6, which are sent back to the adrenal gland, pituitary gland, and hypothalamus.
