Answer to Question 1

Toddlers with their baby fat, protruding bellies, large heads, short limbs, and round
faces develop into taller, leaner, more muscular children with body proportions that
are more adultlike. The changes support physical skill development in that children
acquire many motor skills during this time: they are steadier on their feet, are
quicker to respond, and have better muscle control.

Answer to Question 2

There are several brain areas mentioned throughout the chapter. A summary of
these structures is found in Figure 8.2 on page 213 of the text.

Dogs have been used in studies to detect various cancers in human subjects. They have been trained to sniff breath samples from humans that were collected by having them breathe into special tubes. These people included 55 lung cancer patients, 31 breast cancer patients, and 83 cancer-free patients. The dogs detected 54 of the 55 lung cancer patients as having cancer, detected 28 of the 31 breast cancer patients, and gave only three false-positive results (detecting cancer in people who didn't have it).
