Answer to Question 1

The student should indicate that research found children developed four definitions of who is their real family or not. The first definition is retention. A total of 34 of children in stepfamilies used this definition, which includes only biological parents as real family. The second definition is augmentation, which includes biological and stepparents. The third definition is reduction, which included only the biological parent the child was living with. Lastly, 13 of children used substitution as their definition of real family. It included just the biological parent they were living with and the stepparent.
