Perhaps one of the earliest examples of research on intermodal perception was Bower's work in which he presented to infants an object that appeared to be well within reaching distance while they were wearing special goggles. The object was actual virtual rather than real. The 8- to 31-day-old babies tended to reach for the virtual object and responded with cries of frustration when they found they could not touch it and get the tactile inputs they had expected based on the visual cues they were receiving. The results of this study suggest that vision and touch are integrated and that incongruity between them is uncomfortable for infants.
