Answer to Question 1

The two primary dimensions are (a) the degree of warmth and responsiveness that a parent shows a child, and (b) the level and type of control that a parent enforces on their child's behaviors.
The four parenting styles are (a) authoritarian (high control, little warmth), (b) authoritative (fair degree of control and warmth), (c) permissive (warmth but little control), and (d) neglecting (neither warm nor controlling). If your goal is an independent, intelligent, and self-reliant child, then an authoritative style is the best. In cultures that are looking for more emotional restraint and less individualism, a somewhat more controlling model would be best.

Answer to Question 2

Research indicates that there are no overall differences between the sexes on math
achievement tests. Yet, societal expectations for boys and girls may lead fewer
women to enter the so-called STEM fields: science, technology, engineering, and
mathematics. Why are women underrepresented in these fields? Possible reasons are
that women who would excel in these fields choose careers in other fields more often
than men. Some women with high competencies in math also have high competencies
in verbal ability. This may lead to them choose careers outside the STEM fields. In
some STEM fields, women with children may be penalized in terms of promotions.
However, women continue to enter the STEM fields and are increasingly obtaining
degrees in subjects such as business management, biology, and chemistry. But as long
as there are societal stereotypes about who should enter STEM fields, some women
will be discouraged from pursuing careers in these fields.
