Differentiate between a one-sided and two-sided composite alternative hypothesis when the null hypothesis is H0 :  = 10?

Answer to Question 1

When the null hypothesis is H0 :  = 10, a possible alternative hypothesis would be H1 :  > 10. This alternative hypothesis suggests that population mean value falls in a range of values greater than 10, the value specified in the null hypothesis. Hence, we define this alternative hypothesis as a one-sided composite.
Another possibility would be to test the null hypothesis against the general two-sided composite alternative hypothesis: H1 :   10.
This hypothesis suggests that the value could be lesser or greater than the value specified in the null hypothesis. We choose these hypotheses so that one or the other must be true.
