The nurse is working with a teenager who has insulin-dependent diabetes. This adolescent has returned to the hospital after being discharged a month ago. Both hospitalizations are because of the blood sugar getting out of control.

A 16-pound child weighs 7.27 kg (16 pounds/2.2 = 7.27 kg). Using the formula of 2 mL/kg/hour for an infant: 7.27 kilograms  2 mL/kg/hour = 14.54 mL/hour.
