Answer to Question 1

With all new technology comes the potential for cultural progress. Existing technologies become transformed by the new technologies and what was previously considered advanced now becomes obsolete. When transatlantic air travel became practical, few people took a fast boat to Europe. The time it took to traverse the Atlantic was continually reduced as the speed and luxury of the transport plane increased. The four changes in society due to technology include: changes in social organization - the new technology changes the way a society organizes itself to achieve its goals; changes in social relationships - social relationships are altered to conform to the new technology and people interact differently with each other; changes in ideology - in adapting to the changes, people's ideas change. New ideas are created to support and defend the new technology or to resist the changes that occur with the new technology; and changes in ostentatious consumption - the emphasis of materialism and personal pride which depends on technology. At the heart of ostentatious consumption is a change in ideas and values. Technology often influences the values a society considers to be of primary importance.
