Rationale 1: The nurse should use the equation 12 ounces x 1/2 = x full strength to determine the amount of Ensure used from a 12 ounce can or 12/2 or 6 ounces. To determine the number of mL of the supplement to use, multiply ounces x 30 or 6 x 30 = 180 mL.
