Answer to Question 1

Communism had these principal traits:
 One-party dictatorial governments
National economies planned and directed by organs of the state
Abolition of private ownership (with some exceptions) in the fields of manufacturing, mining, transportation, commerce, and services
 Abolition of independent trade unions
Varying degrees of socialization (state ownership) of agriculture and industry
Collectivizationin the farming context, the bringing together of individual landholdings into a government-organized and government-controlled agricultural unitmet with strong resistance.
Most industries were taken out of private hands, and national economic plans were developed. Communist planners did not aim at a balanced development of all types of industry. Instead, they emphasized those industries deemed essential to the development of a greater Soviet empire: mining, iron and steel, machinery, chemicals, construction materials, and electric power, for example. These were favored while consumer-type industries were neglected.
