Answer to Question 1

Deformed rock layers provide a record of the types and intensities of forces that operated during the
rocks' history, which can tell us about the geologic history of the region. Engineers need to study the
rock where they are planning to build sites for dams, bridges, and nuclear power plants, especially if
the deformation is recent or ongoing. Also, petroleum and natural gas is found in geologic structures.

Answer to Question 2

Deformation is a general term for any change in shape or volume or both of rocks in response to stress,
and involves folding and fracturing. Deformation occurs because of dynamic forces within Earth,
driven largely by plate tectonic movements
