Answer to Question 1An important thing to learn about insects is that there will be fewer incidences of infestation if plants
are quarantined prior to their introduction to an existing collection. A plant quarantine means that a
plant is kept away from other plants, perhaps 30 feet or more, for a period of one to two weeks. Some
experts suggest a month of quarantine. By this time, an infestation, even if initially minor, would be
more readily seen. The most common way that an insect infestation enters a collection is through the
introduction of one infested plant.
