Answer to Question 1

The type of current depends on the type of material to be welded as well as the desired shape and
penetration of the weld bead.

Answer to Question 2

Horizontal welding is made by moving horizontally across a vertical piece of metal. The metal is
placed so that it is comfortable to run a bead across the surface. A sitting position is recommended. A
vertical downward weld is made by moving downward across a vertical piece of metal. They are easy
to make but shallow. A vertical upward weld is made by moving upward across the metal. They are
difficult because heat builds up in the metal as the weld progresses up the metal. Special movements
are used to control the heat and permit individual parts of the puddle to cool. In overhead welding, the
metal is positioned above the welder who is sitting. The electrode is held nearly straight up and down.
