Answer to Question 1

Commitment is a person's intention to remain in a relationship and work through problems. Mutual commitment can arise out of (1 ) a sense of loyalty and fidelity to one's partner; (2 ) a religious, legal, or moral belief in the sanctity of marriage; (3 ) continued optimism about future rewardsemotional, financial, sexual, or others; and (4 ) strong emotional attachments.

Answer to Question 2

Women are much more likely than men to do conversational maintenance work. Conversational maintenance work involves asking questions that encourage conversation. Compared with women, men's speech often reflects conversational dominance, such as speaking more frequently and for longer periods of time. Men also show dominance by interrupting others, reinterpreting the speaker's meaning, or rerouting the conversation. They tend to express themselves in assertive, often absolutist, ways.
