The components of measurement error are systematic error, which causes a constant bias in measurement, and random error. Validity refers to the extent to which the measurement process is free from systematic error, reliability to the extent to which the measurement process is free from random error.

Instructors note that there is a discrepancy in the text regarding whether validity means freedom from both systematic and random error or just systematic. See note in Instructor's Manual for Chapter 3 under Validity and Reliability: Definition and Types for detail.
