Answer to Question 1

Answer: These are the longest joints around, sometimes extending for considerable distances horizontal and vertically. Because these represent major zones of weakness for weathering, weathering proceeds fastest along the master joints. The spacing of the master joints determines much landscape development and the placement of topographic features such as the location of stream valleys.
