Answer to Question 1

center with a perpendicular beam

Rationale: If the lateral lumbar spine image reveals the L5-S1 joint space to be open, then a perpendicular central ray should be directed for the spot image. This image reveals that the patient's spine is parallel to the image receptor; no tube angle is necessary.

Answer to Question 2

AP external rotation

Rationale: Nontrauma imaging of the shoulder routinely uses two AP projections, one with the arm in external rotation and one with the arm in internal rotation. This change in position of the arm shifts visibility of the greater and lesser tubercles.
