A type I response to cell-mediated invasion is mild and characterized by allergic rhinitis. Type II response is mediated by IgG or IgM generating direct damage to the cell surface. The patient with hemolytic anemia is having a type II response. Type III is an IgG- or IgM-mediated reaction characterized by formation of antigenantibody complexes that induce an acute inflammatory reaction in tissues. Type IV hypersensitivity is a delayed hypersensitivity.
