Answer to Question 1

Local changes are just that, local. Local geology (presence of mountains, bodies
of water, etc.) can affect weather in a region. A warmer world will involve changed global
patterns, but the working out of these global changes locally depends on such local
conditions.

Answer to Question 2

The conveyor is run by differences in temperature and salinity. The thermo
part of thermohaline refers to temperature, while the haline part refers to saltiness. It
arises because salts are made from halogens (chlorine, fluorine, etc.).
