There are different approaches to achieving social welfare. Among them are:
 
  A. The residual approach, which focuses on individuals and families and assumes that the family and the market economy are the proper sources for meeting people's needs.
  B. The institutional approach, which assumes that the problems confronted are caused by those being helped and that many people in need are better off in some sort of institution.
  C. The development approach, which emphasizes the delivery of services to solve one individual problem after another.
  D. The random approach, which assumes than any effort to help will be good.

There should be a connection between our theories, perceptions, analyses and strategies. For example,
 
  A. If we believe that struggles are caused by individual behaviors alone, then remediation strategies should be our primary focus.
  B. If we believe that individuals and social institutions, processes and conditions should not or cannot be changed, then problem solving and community organizing will be our primary course.
