As discussed in this book module, poultry and other meats are often contaminated with microorganisms since these are present in the animal's intestinal contents and may cross-contaminate the carcass during slaughter.
 
  However, in recent years there have been several outbreaks involving fresh fruits and vegetables. What are the possible methods or routes for microorganisms to contaminate fresh produce?

- Cross contamination is the biggest issue
- Several foodborne pathogens are present in soil and some fruits and vegetables grow in or very close to the soil
- Similarly, if farm equipment is not sanitized periodically, it may become contamination
- Some farms may not limit access of wild or domesticated animals into the area where produce is grown- this is a hazard for food safety
- Raw manure is another vector responsible for foodborne pathogens in produce
