The two approaches are attribute-based and MDS (multidimensional scaling.) If we want to create a map based on attributes, we have customers complete a survey that asks them to make two kinds of ratings: (1) How does our brand rate on a number of attributes? (2) How important is each of these attributes? MDS is quite different because it simply present pairs of brands and asks, How similar are these two brands? for every pair in the set.
