In general, can CBI software consistently be used in place of live, high-quality teachers?

  a. Yes, because drill-and-practice, tutorial, and simulation programs produce learning gains that are at least as good if not better than those of most teachers.
  b. Yes, because most students are so familiar with computers that they respond more positively to them than they do to teachers.
  c. No, because it costs more to purchase and maintain computers than it does to hire teachers.
  d. No, because computers cannot adjust their instruction to students' verbal and nonverbal responses.

Answer to Question 1

D

Answer to Question 2

Norm-referenced grading can be used to evaluate advanced levels of learning when a two-phase instructional approach is used. In the first phase, use a criterion-referenced approach to be sure that all students have mastered a basic level of competency (for example, 80 percent correct on an exam). The second phase involves advanced instruction, where each student learns as much advanced content as possible. Because there are no external criteria for evaluation, and students' performances will reflect individual differences in motivation and interest, a norm-referenced approach to grading can be used.
