Second Normal Form removes functional dependencies from entities. A functional dependency is where several attributes form a subgroup or sub theme in the entity. These subgroups should be removed to a separate entity. An example might be Employee table that also contains department information. The Department information would form a sub theme that should be separated into its own entity.
