The director of two nursing units is off on medical leave. The morale on these units has decreased over the past year. During the directors absence the CNO (chief nurse officer) notices an increase in the staffs morale.

This causes the CNO to believe these units have an issue with: 1. Appropriate staffing.
  2. Recognition of the nurses performance.
  3. A lack of authentic leadership.
  4. Education.

Question 2

An OB nurse has had multiple client and physician complaints. The manager has addressed these issues several times with the nurse.

In the past year the nurse has had increased overtime to complete the worked shifts documentation, which the manager has also addressed. The nurse has had several verbal and written warnings concerning these issues. The OB physicians have gone to nursing administration regarding the nurses competency on the unit. Which option does the OB manager have at this time concerning the nurse? 1. Voluntary turnover
  2. Termination
  3. Counseling with human resources
  4. Counseling with nursing administration

Answer to Question 1

3
Explanation: 1. A lack of authentic leadership in which leadership embraces and engages staff affects morale.
Appropriate staffing and recognition would increase morale. A lack of or providing education
would not cause an immediate change in staffs morale.

Answer to Question 2

2
Explanation: 1. Termination is the only option left at this point. Voluntary turnover is a term that indicates
employees choosing to leave a unit/organization. Counseling with human resources and
nursing administration are not options since the manager has tried to address the nurses
issues in the past year. The nurse has progressed from client and physician complaints to
increased overtime, which reflect inefficiency on the nurses work performance. Physicians
must be confident of the nurses competence or they will send their clients to other
organizations.
