The International Council of Nurses (ICN) established the International Nurse Practitioner/Advanced Practice Nursing Network in 2000 with the goal of acting as an international resource for nurses, nurse practitioners, and other healthcare stakeholders. The AACN governs the educational schools of nursing. The ANA is an organizational body that represents American nurses and their interest. The WHO is a global body address world health needs.

At the root of the doctoral of nursing practice movement is the rationale that nursing is a discipline seeking a higher body of knowledge, and that nursing is a practice requiring skill refinement and the use of evidence. This is consistent with the doctoral level of other healthcare disciplines. The AACN has taken the position that educational preparation for advanced nursing practice roles should be moved to the doctoral level (DNP) by the year 2015, but that move has not currently been implemented. All nursing licensure at all educational levels is regulated by each individual state and does impact the decision to seek a DNP.
