Answer to Question 1

Answer: The ideal answer will include:
1. Sacrifice of golden eagles is a key aspect of Hopi culture in Arizona.
2. Hopi men collect young eagles in the spring and then sacrifice them in a ceremony that Hopi believe frees their spirits to convey messages to the ancestors.
3. The bald eagle is a symbol of the United States, and it is protected by law. Young eaglets of both species look the same, so the Hopi are prevented from pursuing their cultural practice of sacrifice and using the feathers in their ceremonies.
