If nonpharmacologic means of pain relief are ineffective, it is appropriate to provide the weakest type of analgesic and increase as necessary to control pain. It is not known if older adults are more sensitive to pain and it would inappropriate to administer analgesic medications prophylactically to all older adults.

Educating patients about cancer screening and facilitating their efforts to obtain tests can enable cancers to be detected in early stages, thereby increasing survival rates.
