Compulsive gambling is currently viewed as a disorder of the dopamine neurotransmitter system. Compulsive gamblers get hooked on the excitement of gambling, not necessarily on the money when they win. They need to increase the amount and/or frequency of bets to get the same level of excitement, much as a drug user needs increasing amounts of a drug to feel the same high.
