Improvement in patient comfort is indicated by a decreased respiratory rate, decreased inspirato-ry muscle activity, and synchronization with the ventilator.

Excessive drying of the nasal mucosa as a result of using nasal CPAP or NIV is associated with nasal congestion and increased nasal resistance. This is a leading cause of patient discomfort and noncompliance with the prescribed therapy.
