Answer to Question 1

Mix bedding materials and soiled trays together and introduce the scent before attempting to introduce the animal. Visual contact is important to be able to monitor their behavior.

Answer to Question 2

They are highly social animals. They are forages and hoarders, and require an area of sand to dig in (used for communal scent marking -activity). Degus are able to chew through wood and plastic to escape their cages. Most cages/habitats need to be custom built. They dig cooperate complex tunnels.
